West Brom eye a transfer for versatile Premier League defender: Just what they need

Bournemouth central defender Tyrone Mings is being targeted by West Bromwich Albion, it has been reported recently.

Mings could be allowed to leave the Vitality Stadium on loan if the Cherries manage to get hold of Brentford’s defensive ace Chris Mepham, according to the Sun.

Tyrone Mings: Profile

Mings emerged through the youth ranks of Southampton and Bristol Rovers and before his move to Bournemouth in the summer transfer window of 2015, he had played for Chippenham Town and Ipswich Town.

The 25-year-old hasn’t been able to perform at his best under the tutelage of Eddie Howe as a back injury and knee injury had kept him on the sideline for quite a while.

The former Ipswich man has mustered just two starts in the Premier League this season, and is behind the preferred central defensive duo of Nathan Ake and Steve Cook in the pecking order.

Mings is still a highly rated player, and the manager is apparently reluctant to strike him off his books. Therefore, a loan spell with a Championship club could bring his career back on the right track.

Will he be a good signing for West Brom?

Darren Moore has a good stock of central defenders at his disposal at the Hawthorns, including the likes of Kyle Bartley, Ahmed Hegazy and Craig Dawson, but it would make a lot of sense if they manage to sign Mings.

Moore’s side are challenging for promotion, and considering that his players are likely to get worn out in the later stages of the season, someone like Mings would be handy for them.

Mings is a versatile defender capable of operating as a centre-back and a left-back. He has good Championship experience Championship under his belt, and is a calm and composed player at the back.

The Englishman is comfortable playing the ball out from the back, and his good physical frame would be useful at both ends of the pitch for the Baggies.

Mings has had his share of troubles with injuries, but if he can manage to stay fit, he is likely to challenge for a place in the West Brom in the coming months, should a move materialise.
