Newcastle United Linked With Third Deadline Day Swoop: What Will He Add To The Squad

Newcastle United are keen on securing the services of SL Benfica midfielder Andreas Samaris on loan, according to reports.

As per Chronicle, Newcastle boss Rafael Benitez’s wish of bringing in reinforcements before the closure of the winter transfer window has been granted and Samaris could the third coup of the day for the Magpies.

They have already completed two massive deals. Antonio Barreca has been signed on loan for the rest of the season while the Magpies have smashed their transfer record to sign Miguel Almiron from Atlanta United for around £20m.

Coming to Samaris, it is believed that the Greek midfielder could arrive at Tyneside on loan. But what will he add to the table for the Magpies?

Andreas Samaris: An ideal player for Newcastle

Samaris is one of the most experienced and well-respected players in Greek football, having made his first professional breakthrough way back in the 2010/11 campaign. Since then, the holding midfielder has gone on to make a combined total of almost 200 appearances in Greek and the Portuguese top flight.

Samaris has fallen down the pecking order in the Benfica midfield this season, though, having featured in just 185 minutes of league action. But, the Greek international is still known for his all-round qualities in midfield that could make him an ideal fit at St. James’ Park.

The 29-year-old is generally an all-action midfielder, who, aside from boasting excellent physical attributes, is an aggressive tackler. He had averaged a whopping 3.5 tackles per 90 minutes last season.

His tall frame makes him an intimidating presence in the middle of the park while also giving him the upper hand in terms of aerial duels.

Samaris is also an intelligent midfielder, who can read the game very well – making him somewhat similar to Manchester United star Nemanja Matic.

Furthermore, the Benfica star is an excellent passer of the ball. Even though Samaris may not break the shackles of the opposition with defence threading passes, he certainly knows how to keep hold of possession, attaining at least 85% of passing accuracy for the most part of his career.

This could benefit the Magpies who have struggled to keep a tight grip on games this season, irrespective of the opposition.

Therefore, Samaris could certainly add more vigour and solidity to Newcastle’s midfield department, especially with Mohamed Diame struggling with injuries.

His ability to control possession while providing a shield in front of the backline is something Newcastle have lacked this season – making Samaris an ideal player for Magpies as they aim to finish the season on a high which is evident in their deadline day forays following the win against champions Manchester City.
