Aston Villa eyeing a transfer for Premier League midfielder: SWOT analysis

According to a report by Mirror, Aston Villa are keeping close tabs on Newcastle United midfielder Isaac Hayden.

West Bromwich Albion are also monitoring Hayden closely. The midfielder’s future at St. James’ Park hangs in the balance, and though Rafael Benitez wants him to stay, the lack of playing time might force Hayden to move elsewhere.

Aston Villa have already signed goalkeeper Lovre Kalinic from Gent and Kortney Hause from Wolves this month, and are still active in the transfer market.

Here is a SWOT analysis of Aston Villa’s transfer target.

Strengths

Hayden is a versatile player who would provide cover for the holding midfield and the centre-back spots. He is tough with his tackling and commanding in the air, and can be a good anchor in the midfield.

The Englishman also has good work-rate and is great at breaking opposition attacks.

Weaknesses

Hayden is not renowned for his passing and he needs to work on that since the Championship is a lot more intense and rugged.

Besides, his limitation while going forward classifies him as a one-dimensional player. If the 23-year-old wishes to take his game to the next level, he has to be a lot more confident while driving forward.

Opportunities

Smith’s side need a calm and resolute figure in the midfield and Hayden fits the bill. He has received just four starts in the Premier League so far for the Magpies, and a young player with a lot of potential like him must be craving to be on the pitch week in and week out.

The former Arsenal academy graduate helped Hull City and Newcastle United in their promotion quests and his experience of having plied his trade in the Championship is valuable. Bringing him to the Villa Park would certainly increase Aston Villa’s chances of promotion.

Threats

Despite his prominence previously in the Championship, it won’t be easy for Hayden to walk straight into Smith’s starting line-up considering Aston Villa have a good stock of midfielders.

Besides, the Villans might have to tweak their tactical formations in order to accommodate him if his move does materialise.
