Newcastle United Linked With Exciting Japanese Attacker: Pros And Cons Of A Possible Move

According to Chronicle, Newcastle United are monitoring the situation of Groningen attacker Ritsu Doan with the January transfer window looming large.

The Japanese winger has impressed in the Eredivisie this season, scoring four goals in 16 matches, attracting the interest of Rafael Benitez, who is keen to shore up his side’s attack next month. And in this article, we will discuss the pros and cons of Doan’s potential move to Tyneside.

Pros

Ritsu Doan can prove to be an excellent signing for Newcastle United for many reasons, one of which is his versatility in attack. Indeed, the 20-year-old can be deployed anywhere across the final third, which will benefit Benitez as he can utilize him not only as the secondary striker but also as a winger, whenever necessary.

Speaking of which, Doan is primarily a playmaker, despite operating in a wider role for the most part of this season. Doan loves to cut-inside and act as the creative spark in the final third – a feature that could surely benefit Newcastle, who have been blunt going forward for large parts of their season. His tally of 15 key passes is only bettered by two of his teammates until now.

Furthermore, the Japanese international is blessed with immense technical qualities, which, fused with his application makes him one of the most sought-after talents in Dutch football. He also has a keen eye for goal, having already netted four times whilst maintaining an average of 2.4 shots per game.

In addition, his tactical and positional awareness is of the highest order and certainly well beyond his age, which will certainly ease his job of settling into the new conditions in England.

Cons

There aren’t many downsides in regards to Doan’s potential move to Newcastle aside from the fact that the 20-year-old is not a physically astute attacker and therefore, he might find it difficult to get used to the hustle of the Premier League.

It has been a problem for many Asian players trying to find their feet in Europe and Doan, too, could face similar issues in this physically demanding league.

Another notable downside to Doan’s game is his lack of crossing ability. The Japanese international is not the best crosser of the ball around and with Benitez favouring the use of direct wingers who can ping the ball inside the box towards the likes of Rondon, this aspect of the game might prove to be a hindrance for the player.
