Newcastle United eyeing a move for AC Milan forward: A good choice by Rafa?

According to Tutto Mercato (via Sunderland Echo), Newcastle United are eyeing a shock move for Milan forward Fabio Borini.

Borini’s future in Italy is uncertain, as he has made only 11 appearances this season and has scored just one goal.

As for Newcastle, they have lacked the attacking substance this season and are keen to sign a new attacker in the upcoming January transfer window.

But is Borini the ideal target for the Magpies?

Fabio Borini: Player profile

A former Chelsea youth player, Borini began his professional career in England but after failing to make an impact at Chelsea and Liverpool, the Italian finally found a good run on games at Sunderland in the 2013/14 campaign and made 32 league appearances.

His move was made permanent by Sunderland in the summer of 2015, but following the Black Cats’ relegation in the 2016/17 campaign, Borini was shipped off to Milan in 2017.

Although he made 29 league appearances in his debut campaign with the Italian giants, he has falled down the pecking order this season.

Borini is a quick attacker who is often used as a utility player thanks to his excellent versatility. Indeed, the Italian can play anywhere across the final third.

But, his biggest asset as a player is his astounding physical prowess. Despite having a short stance of 1.80m, Borini certainly packs a lot of punch and is hard to shrug off the ball. In addition, the 27-year-old get into good goal-scoring positions, attempting almost two shots per 90 minutes.

Should Newcastle pursue Fabio Borini?

While Borini may not provide the creative spark Newcastle are hoping for, the former Italian international is certainly a useful player to have, thanks to his versatility.

The fact that he can play anywhere across the pitch will be a boon for Rafael Benitez, who has struggled with a lack of resources this season. Additionally, Borini is a physically astute attacker who can shield the ball very well – making him a tailor-made fit for Benitez’s tactical setup at Newcastle.

However, what makes Borini an appealing target for the Magpies is his previous exposure in the Premier League. As a matter of fact, the 27-year-old has made over 100 appearances in the English top flight, which may help him get used to the new conditions faster as he looks to redeem his career.
