Liverpool Eyeing a Swoop for German Goal-Getter: A Smashing Move by Klopp

Liverpool are set to battle it out with Bayern Munich for the services of RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner, according to a report from Abendzeitung (via Metro).

After a slow start to the season, Werner has scored ten goals in 16 matches this season, and a move to the Premier League might be on the horizon even though Bayern are keen to keep him in the Bundesliga.

Liverpool are keen to sign the German international, but is he a viable target for the Reds?

Timo Werner: Player profile

Werner has been scoring on a consistent basis ever since moving to Leipzig in the summer of 2016.

The forward has netted over 50 goals in less than 100 competitive appearances for the East German outfit, earning him a regular spot in the German national team.

Although Werner primarily played as a winger during his time with Stuttgart, the 22-year-old can be deemed as an out and out striker, thanks to a couple of fruitful campaigns with Leipzig.

Werner is mainly known for his pace and trickery, which has made him an ideal fit for Leipzig’s counter-attacking style of play.

Indeed, the German international can quickly cover a lot of distance and often likes to run in behind the defence.

But, the 22-year old’s quality is not only restricted to his good burst of pace as he is also quite good when it comes to physical duels and is, therefore, very difficult to knock off the ball despite his small stature.

Why Liverpool need Werner

Liverpool boast one of the most dangerous attacking setups in Europe this season but Roberto Firmino’s lack of goals could be a worry for Jurgen Klopp in the second half of the campaign.

Therefore, Werner could be a smart signing and even more so given that the 22-year-old is blessed with qualities that make him a tailor-made fit for Klopp’s style of football.

Werner can be utilised as the lone centre-forward, thus allowing Mohamed Salah to play in his customary right-wing position.

Most importantly, however, the Leipzig star is an aggressive attacker who can press opposition defenders, just like Firmino, who is known for his incredible work ethic.

Liverpool have a real chance to lift the title this season, so adding someone like Werner would only make them a more complete unit.
