West Ham United Eyeing A Transfer For Bayern Munich Star: A Good Fit?

According to SportBild, West Ham United are eyeing a move for Bayern Munich forward Sandro Wagner in the upcoming January transfer window.

The German forward is frustrated due to his lack of opportunities under Niko Kovac and is reportedly keen to leave Germany.

West Ham, in particular, have been alerted to his current situation at Bayern and could make a move in January as they aim to bulk up their attack. But is he a smart choice for the Hammers?

Sandro Wagner: Player profile

Wagner is known for his robust style of play in the final third. Although he may not be the most agile forward in the world, he certainly has an impressive work-rate and can influence the players around him.

The forward’s biggest strength lies in his ability to hold on to the ball, largely thanks to his physical prowess. He is difficult to be shrugged off the ball, which enables his teammates to make runs in behind the defence.

Most importantly, however, the German international excels in the air, thanks to his 194cm frame, which lends him an advantage in aerial duels. In fact, Wagner has averaged over seven headed duels per 90 mins, despite playing just four matches this season.

Wagner’s disciplinary record neems a massive improvement while he is notoriously known for his character, notably claiming himself as the best German striker during his time with Hoffenheim.

Will Wagner fit in at West Ham United?

Sandro Wagner is undoubtedly a proven goalscorer. His imposing presence inside the penalty box makes him an ideal alternative to Andy Carroll, who has struggled with fitness problems for the most part of his career.

However, Wagner may not be best fitted to Manuel Pellegrini’s tactical philosophy at West Ham. One of the key changes the Chilean has made this season has been the significant drop in numbers in terms of chances created from crosses with the Hammers boasting two inverted wingers, who like to cut inside.

This, somewhat, nullifies Wagner’s aerial prowess while his lack of technical qualities further restricts him from being a perfect signing for the Hammers.

Most importantly, however, his foul attitude could cause problems inside the dressing room, something which doesn’t go all too well with Pellegrini.
