Southampton Eyeing A Swoop For £15m forward: SWOT Analysis

According to Record (via Talksport), Southampton are eyeing a move for Shoya Nakajima in the upcoming transfer window. The Portimonense attacker has been identified as a top target by the Saints who are willing to spend £15 million on the forward in January.

Southampton could face stiff competition from Leicester City who are also interested in the forward.

Here’s a SWOT analysis of the highly rated forward who could make a big-money move in January.

Strengths

Shoya Nakajima is a versatile forward who can not only score goals but can also serve as a creative spark in attack.

Indeed, the 24-year-old is very effective in the final third, having averaged over two key passes per game in addition to scoring four goals this season.

Nakajima can play anywhere across the final third, although he’s more effective when deployed on the left flank. He often cuts inside to open up the defence and then uses his nifty skills to get past opposition players. He averages averaging almost 2 dribbles per game.

However, what makes him such a sought-after talent is his composure in the final third. The Japanese is often aware of his surroundings and knows exactly when to pick out a teammate.

Weaknesses

Consistency is the main issue for Nakajima. While he’s certainly a delight to watch while in full flow, he is equally ineffective when he’s having a bad day at the office. He also lacks the physical qualities, largely thanks to his 1.64-metre figure, which in turn, minimises his potential in terms of aerial duels.

In addition, Nakajima should improve on his work-rate as well, which could be essential to thrive at a club like Southampton

Opportunities

Southampton are in dire need of new attacking reinforcements and Shoya Nakajima could be the ideal candidate. The 24-year-old can make things happen in the final third with his excellent movement and skilled passing.

He may not displace Nathan Redmond on the left-flank straightaway, but he certainly has the potential to impress.

Threats

Nakajima’s lack of consistency and physical prowess could be a huge issue for the Japanese international, especially in the Premier League.

Additionally, Nakajima doesn’t have enough experience in European football, having made only 38 top-flight appearances for Portimonense.
