Manchester United Confident Of Signing La Liga Defensive Rock: Will He Fit In?

According to the Daily Star (via ESPN), Manchester United have made Diego Godin their top priority signing in the upcoming January transfer window.

The Red Devils are keen to shore up their defence following a shaky start to the season. Godin’s current contract with Atletico expires at the end of the season and thus, a move away from Wanda Metropolitano could be on the horizon this January.

Diego Godin: player profile

Diego Godin is primarily known for his dogged defending and hard-working mentality. He rarely leaves his marker and is also quite strong in the air as well, having won over 2.5 aerial duels per game, which is only bettered by Saul Niguez and Rodrigo.

Godin’s doggedness is visible in the impressive stats he has mustered. He has made more clearances than any other Atletico player. In addition, he has also averaged over one interception per game, which is quite impressive for a central defender.

Most importantly, however, it is Godin’s tackling prowess which makes him a defensive stalwart. Although the Uruguayan often appears reluctant in committing to challenges, he boasts an incredible tackle success rate of 82%.

His aerial prowess also makes him a threat when it comes to set-pieces. Indeed, he has played over 360 competitive games for Atletico, during which he has scored 25 goals for the club, which is no mean feat for a central defender.

Can he fit into Manchester United?

Diego Godin could be an ideal signing for Manchester United for a number of reasons. First of which, is his vast experience at the highest level of football – meaning he is unlikely to take time settling down in English football.

Most importantly, Godin has flourished under the leadership of Diego Simeone, a defence-oriented manager who has an impressive record at Atletico.

And given the fact that Mourinho, more or less, implements a similar philosophy, at least when it comes to defensive priorities, Godin will definitely find it easy to make the transition.

The Uruguayan’s strength, quality and commitment at the back could revamp a Manchester United defence, that has conceded more goals than any other side in the top half of the Premier League table this season.

Additionally, he is also a born leader, which could be beneficial for the Red Devils as they have lacked the presence of a commander at the back ever since the departure of Nemanja Vidic.
