According to the Express (via Watford Observer), Chelsea are plotting a shock move for Roberto Pereyra in the upcoming January transfer window.
The Watford ace has been identified as Eden Hazard’s replacement, who is still heavily courted by European champions Real Madrid.
Pereyra has scored five goals this season and has played a key role for the Hornets this season.
But, is he really a viable transfer target for the Blues?
Pereyra is a dynamic attacker who can feature on the flanks as well as the attacking midfield position. The Argentine has been generally utilised in a wider attacking role by head coach Javi Gracia this season, with all 11 of his appearances coming on the left-flank.
While he may not be a goal-threat as opposed to the likes of Richarlison or Eden Hazard, Pereyra certainly has the quality to breach the opposing defence with his excellent movement. He averages nearly two shots on goal per game whilst attempting 3.6 dribbles – highest in the team.
Pereyra becomes very useful especially when it comes to probing the opposing defence because his movement is good.
The Argentinian has attempted 17 shots from inside the penalty area, five of which have found the back of the net. This, in turn, is also indicative of his excellent conversion rate in front of goal, making him a lethal finisher.
Surprisingly, however, Pereyra is yet to register an assist in the league this season but given his overall contribution in the final third, it’s probably safe to say that he is Watford’s most important player going forward.
Roberto Pereyra could be an exciting addition to Chelsea given his all-round qualities in the final third. Although he may not be an adequate replacement for someone like Eden Hazard, the Argentinian could boost Chelsea’s attacking resources.
His technical qualities will help him adapt to Maurizio Sarri’s fast-paced style in the attacking half while his movement will be crucial against teams who defend in deep-blocks.
Furthermore, Pereyra is also known for his game intelligence in midfield, having averaged almost one interception per game.
Thus, he could prove to be much more than just a regular winger as he can also be utilised in a more central role, ultimately giving Sarri more balance in terms of tactical flexibility.
