Tottenham Hotspur Linked With A Move For Ajax Star: The Ideal Replacement For Lloris?

According to Voetbal, Tottenham Hotspur have entered the race to sign Andre Onana in the upcoming January transfer window. The Ajax goalkeeper has been a subject of interest from a host of clubs across Europe with Tottenham being the latest one to join the list.

It is believed that Spurs are keen to bolster their goalkeeping department with both Hugo Lloris and Michel Vorm putting in underwhelming performances so far this season.

But is Onana really an ideal candidate for the Lilywhites?

Andre Onana: Player attributes and stats

Andre Onana has performed well ever since his breakthrough in the 2015/16 season. He featured in 32 Eredivisie matches in his first season while playing a key role in Ajax’s impressive run to the final of the Europa League.

This season, however, Onana has performed at a whole new level, having kept eight clean sheets in just 10 Eredivisie matches so far.

Although Ajax still trail league leaders PSV by five points, Onana’s excellent performances have played a key role in their strong defence. The side have conceded just four goals this season.

The 22-year-old has racked up good numbers as well, notably amassing 32 saves, 20 of which were shots inside the penalty area showing his incredible reflexes.

Furthermore, he also excels in circulating possession inside his own half, having misplaced only two of his 166 attempted short passes this season. However, he certainly needs to improve on his long pass distribution as he averages almost four inaccurate long passes per game.

A good signing for Tottenham?

Andre Onana is definitely one of the most promising young goalkeepers in Europe at the moment and given his solid performances this season, it’s only a matter of time before he makes the next step in his career.

Tottenham, in that regard, could be an interesting suitor for the Ajax starlet given their impressive repertoire of nurturing talented players.

However, the Spurs already boast the services of Hugo Lloris, who is regarded as one of the best keepers in world football and he’s just 31 years old, meaning it’s very likely that Onana will have to serve as a second choice keeper for the most part.

Spurs will have to make a decision on Onana as it is likely he will move only for first-team action. If Lloris’ performances continue to be inconsistent, then perhaps it’s worth signing Onana and giving him a first-team role.
