Goodbye Legend: Defender Leaves Norwich City After Nine Years

Russell Martin’s contract with Norwich City has been terminated by mutual consent of the club and the player. During his spell of nine years at the Carrow Road, Martin made 309 appearances for the Canaries and there is no denying that he was a loyal servant of the club.

Having emerged through the youth ranks of Brighton & Hove Albion, the centre-back began his professional career with Lewes. After an illustrious spell with Wycombe Wanderers, he switched to the ranks of Peterborough United before moving to Norwich City on loan in December 2009.

He was signed permanently in January 2010 and helped the Yellow Army in getting promoted to the Premier League in 2011 and 2015. The 32-year spent the second half of the previous campaign out on loan with Scottish giants Rangers and Norwich City manager Daniel Farke was looking to loan him out yet again this season.

Speaking after the termination of his contract, Martin said: “”It’s not been easy for anyone, this situation I’ve been in. I really appreciate the fact that the club and I have agreed to do it, basically because it means I’m free to go and play football somewhere and start again.”
