Thibaut Courtois forced his way out of the Stamford Bridge during the summer transfer window after he made a switch to the ranks of Real Madrid. Chelsea fans were justifiably angry at the manner in which the Belgian international left the club just before the transfer window closed for the Premier League clubs.
Considering that his contract with the London based side was due to expire next summer, Courtois was reportedly offered a new deal to extend his stay. However, he clearly refused to sign on the dotted line of the contract extension with the Blues and was eventually lured to Santiago Bernabeu by the Spanish giants.
Owing to his exit, Maurizio Sarri’s camp had to sign Kepa Arrizabalaga from Athletic Bilbao in a world-record deal for a custodian. As if his exit was not enough, Courtois has apparently worsened his relationship with Chelsea further by stating that the standard in Real Madrid is higher than what it was in the ranks of his former employers.
He said: “In training, you see that the level at Real Madrid is high. I am now experiencing on a daily basis that Ramos is the best centre-back in the world. The level at Real Madrid is higher than at Chelsea.” Even in his absence, Sarri’s side have carved a stupendous start to their new season, having bagged four wins in as many league games so far.
