It was another inspired night at Anfield as Liverpool left it late against Ligue 1 Champions PSG to start their Champions League campaign with a win. Six wins in six games in all competitions could get better when the Reds host Southampton at Anfield in the Premier League.
Liverpool are yet to drop a point in the league, having won all their five games. Their last one was arguably the toughest and yet, Jürgen Klopp’s side put in a dominating display against Tottenham.
Southampton won’t be an easy side to play against but confidence will be low after the Saints surrendered a two-goal lead last Monday to draw the game 2-2 against Brighton.
Roberto Firmino is fit again and will be full of confidence after his late winner against PSG. Adam Lallana is still unavailable after his groin injury, and Dejan Lovren is out until the end of the month. Fabinho is getting up to speed and is in line to get a start come Saturday.
Defence
Alisson Becker is the number one ‘keeper and should keep his place in goal. He didn’t really have to do much against PSG.
Trent Alexander-Arnold had quite a comfortable night against PSG as well and is expected to keep his place ahead of former Southampton man Nathaniel Clyne. Joe Gomez and Virgil van Dijk did well to keep Cavani out of the game and should start at the heart of the defence.
Andy Robertson matched Kylian Mbappe for pace on Tuesday night and he should keep his place at left-back.
Midfield
This is one area where we could see a few changes. James Milner and Gini Wijnaldum put in quite a shift against PSG and could be rested. Fabinho might start on the right side of midfield, considering he has played as a right-back before.
Naby Keita could return to the starting XI at the expense of Milner while Jordan Henderson will keep his place as the deepest midfielder.
Attack
Mo Salah had one of his worst games in a Liverpool shirt in terms of his output. Could we see Xherdan Shaqiri finally getting a start? Maybe not. Shaqiri might be Klopp’s choice of starting against Chelsea in the EFL Cup, so Salah could keep his place.
Sadio Mane is expected to keep his place on the left. Bobby Firmino should return to the starting XI despite Daniel Sturridge’s impressive performance against PSG.
