Expert Opinion: Former Arsenal Midfielder Sceptical Of Emery’s Defence

After losses against Manchester City and Chelsea, Arsenal carved back-to-back wins in the Premier League after they bagged all three points against West Ham United and Cardiff City. However, Emmanuel Petit believes that the Gunners are going to continue to struggle to reach the top-four spots.

Petit told to RMC Sport: “Arsenal’s defence is still a long way from the level needed to compete with the top four teams in the Premier League. We saw it again against Cardiff. It is a recurring problem that dates back years with Arsenal. It has never been fixed, neither by Unai Emery, nor Arsene Wenger, nor the players out on the pitch.”

The Frenchman’s comments make a great deal of sense as Unai Emery’s troops have conceded as many as eight goals in four league outings so far. Much like the scenery during the reign of Arsene Wenger, Emery’s Arsenal are lacking the required cohesion and resilience and a lot of work is required to be done.

Even veteran custodian Petr Cech has made some questionable mistakes. Notably, Arsenal did make some defensive additions during the summer transfer window, having lured Bernd Leno, Sokratis Papastathopoulos and Stephan Lichtsteiner. The team is taking time to adjust under Emery and it would be intriguing to see how they fare after the international break.
