Liverpool spent in excess of £175m to beef up their arsenal during the summer transfer window, with Alisson, Naby Keita, Xherdan Shaqiri and Fabinho being lured to the Anfield by Jurgen Klopp.
Their new additions have made them second-favourites to clinch the Premier League title as per the bookies and their scintillating 4-0 win over West Ham United last Sunday showcased their strengths.
On the contrary, Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho was left frustrated and utterly disappointed due to the lack of signings. In particular, Mourinho was keen to lay his hands on a proven centre-back, but his wish wasn’t catered to.
The Portuguese, while speaking to Sky Sports about Liverpool’s business, had some strong words against them. He said: “I think Liverpool are trying to buy the title, but when I say buying I mean ‘buying’ with amazing investment.”
His comments didn’t go down very well with many pundits, including former Liverpool legend Phil Thompson, who had won 7 English top-flight titles with the Reds in a 13-year spell with them. Thompson even went on to accuse Mourinho of being a hypocrite.
He said on Sky Sports: “Liverpool trying to buy the title? Oh my goodness. I’d accept that from a few other clubs and their managers, but not from Jose about Liverpool. It was an absolutely outrageous comment from Jose Mourinho, who’s bought titles wherever he’s gone.”
