Manchester City player ratings vs Wolves: Forwards impress despite the draw

Manchester City were held to a 1:1 draw by Wolverhampton Wanderers in a fascinating encounter that saw the defending champions drop two valuable points.

Here are the player ratings for the away side:

Ederson (7/10): A very quiet afternoon for the Brazilian international, who had to make only one save throughout the game. He showed great reflexes to deny Helder Costa but could do nothing about Boly’s goal, which should have been ruled out in the first place.

Kyle Walker (6.5/10): An average performance from Kyle Walker following his return to the starting eleven. The English international was often pegged back by Diogo Jota, which prevented him from going forward. He did remain solid at the back to keep the opposing attacker at bay, however.

Vincent Kompany (6/10): A tough outing for Vincent Kompany who struggled to impose his authority throughout the course of the match. The Belgian was caught off-guard many times and looked very tentative on the ball.

Aymeric Laporte (8/10): Arguably the most impressive centre-back for Manchester City this season, Laporte continued his impressive form with another impressive performance against Wolves. Although he did fail to keep out Boly from scoring the opener, he made a string of passes to help his side in the build-up and also scored the all-important equaliser in the second half.

Benjamin Mendy (7.5/10): Had a relatively tougher outing against Wolves, whose high-intensity gameplay minimised the Frenchman’s attacking influence on the flanks. That being said, the former AS Monaco starlet still managed to produce a couple of great crosses and attempted seven tackles with a success rate of 57%.

Fernandinho (7.5/10): Was okay in the centre of the pitch, where he stood true to his game by breaking up play in crucial moments. But, quick-footed movements from the Wolves midfielders often caused trouble for the Brazilian international, at times. One of those times when Fernandinho could have used a defensive partner in midfield.

David Silva (7.5/10): Wasn’t as influential as he was in the last game though he made a total of five dribbles. Silva also chipped in with three key passes and was solid in possession, attaining a pass accuracy of 86%.

Ilkay Gundogan (8.5/10): An improved performance from Ilkay Gundogan, who was in his groove following a couple of mediocre performances in the first two matches. The German looked quite composed on the ball and made quite a few neat passes across the final third whilst working his way around the half-spaces. His accurate crosses were a feature of his game earlier today and Pep Guardiola will hope he can maintain his form in the upcoming matches.

Bernardo Silva (8/10): Produced a couple of stunning passes, including the one to set Aguero free in the first half. But, he was unlucky to have sacrificed in the second half as Guardiola opted for more firepower upfront by introducing Gabriel Jesus.

Sergio Aguero (9/10): Despite failing to find the back of the net, it was another excellent performance from Sergio Aguero, who hit the post late on. The Argentine international also looked quite sharp whenever he was on the ball. Aguero will surely be hoping for a better luck when he faces Newcastle United in the next game, a team he likes scoring against.

Raheem Sterling (8/10): Provided a constant threat to the opposing defence from the flanks, where he used his pace and trickery to evade the high-intensity press from the Wolves’ players. Also produced a stunning effort to force a world class save from Rui Patricio in the first half.

Substitutes

Gabriel Jesus (6.5/10): After replacing an influential Bernardo Silva just at the stroke of the hour mark, Gabriel Jesus was ineffective as he could only accumulate ten touches during the last 30 minutes.

Leroy Sane (NA): Replaced Ilkay Gundogan with just 13 minutes remaining on the clock. But, he too struggled to make an impact on proceedings as he was often pegged back by an aggressive bunch of Wolverhampton defenders.

Riyad Mahrez (NA): Had very little time to make an impact after coming on for Raheem Sterling in the 85th minute.
