As per one of the latest reports by East Anglian Daily Times, Derby County have won the race to sign Ipswich Town’s striker Martyn Waghorn. Apart from the Rams, their fellow Championship rivals Sheffield United and Middlesbrough were also vying for Waghorn’s signature this summer.
Although the Smoggies had their bid accepted by the Tractor Boys, Derby County have been reported to have matched the bid from Tony Pulis’ camp. Intriguingly, the player is keen to make a move to the Pride Park Stadium, and his exit from the Portman Road is set to take place this summer.
£5million was the amount that was offered by Middlesbrough, according to a report by Derbyshire Live. Ipswich Town had been holding out for £8million for Waghorn, but Paul Hurst hinted that his side have accepted less than what they slapped on his collar.
A Breeze Of Change
Derby County have churned some stupendous signings this summer, such as Jack Marriott, Florian Jozefzoon and Harry Wilson, under the tutelage of Frank Lampard. They inked a healthy start to their Championship campaign as they secured a 1-2 win over Reading at the Madejski Stadium on Saturday. Signing someone like Waghorn will certainly better their chances of promotion.

The 28-year-old emerged through the youth ranks of Sunderland, but he couldn’t garner a respectable position in the senior side of the Black Cats. After loan spells with Charlton Athletic and Leicester City, the Foxes signed him permanently in the summer of 2009.
After that, he switched to the ranks of Wigan Athletic and Rangers and eventually, he was made to sign on the dotted line by Ipswich Town last summer. He was in top form in the English second tier last term as he scored 16 goals and registered 11 assists.
A strong centre-forward with clinical finishing abilities, Waghorn has the know-how to hold the ball meticulously in the final third. He creates ample amount of goalscoring chances for his teammates and more often than not, his movements on and off the ball are exemplary.
Will He Be A Good Signing?
The Englishman has volumes of knowledge of English football under his belt and he will definitely be an astute signing by Lampard. He still has a number of years of competitive football left to offer and his introduction will certainly cultivate more competition for a place in the starting line-up of Derby County.
