3 wins in 3 games: Chelsea player ratings from their win vs Newcastle United

Maurizio Sarri and Chelsea kept their good start intact after beating Newcastle United 2-1 at St James’ Park earlier today.

Here are the Chelsea player ratings:

Kepa Arrizabalaga (5)

Should have done better to keep his near post safe from Joselu’s shot and also showed a slight weakness in claiming air balls, which could be an issue for Sarri’s side in the future.

Cesar Azpilicueta (6)

Was tested at times by the Jacob Murphy’s direct approach but the Spaniard stood strong, winning four tackles and also putting in a few inviting crosses whenever given some space in the attacking third.

Antonio Rudiger (6)

A thunderous shot that hit the crossbar was his biggest involvement in the game as he was hardly tested by the Newcastle attack.

David Luiz (5)

Was beaten for pace on a couple of occasions and should have covered the run of Joselu for the equaliser on an otherwise comfortable night for the Brazilian.

Marcos Alonso (8)

With three aerial duels won, two tackles and passing accuracy of 91%, Alonso won the penalty that opened the scoring and was a constant threat to the Magpies backline. He also took the shot for the winner that deflected off Yedlin into the back of the net.

N’Golo Kante (6)

Was quick to turn defence into attack with some direct running and his five tackles and three through balls helped Chelsea maintain the pressure on the hosts.

Jorginho (6)

Was quick to win the ball back in the midfield and was happy to lay off simple passes, keeping his side on the top with a pass success rate of 91%.

Mateo Kovacic (6)

Calm and composed on the ball, the Croatian was crucial in recycling possession, completing 92% of his passes and also creating a chance on the night.

Pedro (7)

The Spaniard was happy to pick up different positions in and around the box and his movement often created problems for the Newcastle defence. He completed every pass he attempted and was influential in Chelsea dominating the game.

Alvaro Morata (5)

Yet another disappointing game for the Spaniard, who took two shots, just one on target, and rarely tested Dubravka in the Newcastle goal.

Eden Hazard (7)

Made no mistake from the spot when it really mattered but was frustrated from open play as Newcastle United teamed up on the right flank. Hazard was fouled quite a few times and need better protection from the referees.

Substitutes

Olivier Giroud (6)

Was fouled in the build-up to Joselu’s goal and added a presence in the final third that made the Newcastle backline a bit nervy late in the game.

Willian (6)

Added some fresh legs to the Chelsea attack and was crucial in relieving pressure late in the game as Newcastle threw everything at Chelsea.

Ross Barkley (N/A)

Came on with 10 minutes to spare and did well to see off the game.
