Tottenham Hotspur linked with a move for French attacker: A statement of intent?

Tottenham Hotspur’s transfer business hasn’t yet grabbed the headlines. Like last summer, the North London side have been rather quiet but that could soon change.

Like Spurs, Manchester United too haven’t grabbed the attention for spending money this summer. Before they sign anyone, there could be a few departures, however. One of the players who could leave the club is Anthony Martial.

The former Monaco starlet was signed for a then record fee for a teenager but has failed to consistently get into the playing XI which could be one of the reasons for him potentially leaving.

Recent reports reveal that Tottenham are one of the sides interested in signing him. Pochettino has managed to build a strong playing XI but the silverware has still managed to elude them. Strengthening their team is the only option and Martial is one player who could potentially challenge Son Heung-Min for a first-team place.

Anthony Martial came with a lot of buzz and he lived up to it having scored a stunning solo goal against Liverpool in his early days. However, he just hasn’t been able to bring the consistency which is one of the reasons why Jose Mourinho hasn’t persisted with him.

Another problem with the Frenchman is he isn’t the most reliable of player when it comes to defending. Mourinho emphasises on his attackers doing the dirty work as well, something which Alexis Sanchez is known for, unlike Martial.

Son, on the other hand, is one of the most hard-working attackers you’ll see in the Premier League.  The South Korean often tracks back and is an integral part of the press that we’ve come to see under the reign of Pochettino.

Stats wise, there’s not much to separate between the two. He might not be the all-round winger that Son is, but in 30 games last season, out of which 18 were starts, Martial mustered nine goals and five assists.

Son, on the other hand, scored 12 and assisted six in 37 games, out of which he started in 27. So the numbers are pretty even. Martial would definitely add more potency to the Spurs attack.

His contract runs out in 2019, so United might have to sell him in the on-going summer or risk losing him for next to nothing in January. If Spurs can manage to sign him, it’ll be a pretty big statement of intent.
