Newcastle United linked with a move for £20m rated forward: A wise choice?

The Premier League transfer window closes in around two weeks’ time and it’s now or never for the sides as the pre-season intensifies.

Newcastle United haven’t done much business in the ongoing window and are still on the lookout for players that can improve the team.

If reports from the Liverpool Echo are to be believed, the club are linked with a move for Liverpool forward Danny Ings.

The Liverpool forward has had an injury-ravaged spell with the Reds is way down the pecking order at Anfield. Currently left with two strikers who are injury-prone, Sturridge and Ings, the Reds are willing to let Ings go for a fee of £20 million.

Newcastle United haven’t broken their transfer record since signing Michael Owen for a club-record £22.5 million.

Considering their struggle for goals last season —  they mustered just 39 goals in 38 games – signing a striker is mandatory in the next couple of weeks.

Would Danny Ings be a good purchase?

The window these days is pretty inflated and there is little use arguing against the fee Liverpool are asking for Ings. The biggest question is can he do the job up front? Judging from past performances, he can. The problem is because he has been of colour for so long, he would be a pretty big gamble.

Still only 26, Ings will be entering his peak years as a forward but he has to sort of re-build his reputation as a good penalty box striker after a few bad seasons at Merseyside.

Before joining the Reds, Ings was a key part of the Burnley side that went down despite putting up a brave fight. His 21 goals in the Championship during the 2013-14 season helped Burnley get promoted to the top flight.

Ings showed that he was not just another one of those English forwards who could score only in the lower leagues by mustering 11 goals during his first-ever top-flight season. He is someone who has a good burst of pace and likes to take on players in the attacking third. His defensive work rate is something that’ll help the Magpies too.

As stated before, his injury problems are worrying and that’s the only reservation one can have against him joining Newcastle. He managed just 6 starts in the last two seasons and scored three goals combined.

If he can keep fit, he could be a pretty good buy. But that’s a pretty big ‘if’.
