Liverpool could return for World Cup winner: The missing piece of the jigsaw?

Liverpool have already had a pretty impressive transfer window as Jürgen Klopp has overseen the arrival of three big-name signings. Naby Keita, Fabinho and Xherdan Shaqiri have joined the Reds but there is room for further improvement in the coming weeks.

With less than a month to go before the window closes, Liverpool need to ensure they get the deals done in time. While signing a goalkeeper has been mooted, recent reports indicate that the club could return to try and make another attempt to sign Lyon attacker Nabil Fekir.

Fekir recently lifted the World Cup with France and has been edging for a move following a very successful season with the Ligue 1 outfit. Shaqiri’s signing sort of gave a hint that the Reds have settled for a cheaper alternative but with another long season of league and European football coming up, Klopp needs to be able to replace the first team stars with equally good players in the bench.

Why did the Nabil Fekir deal collapse in the first place?

There have been reports that Fekir failed his medical at Melwood while others have stated that the deal collapsed because Liverpool weren’t ready to match Lyon’s asking price for the attacker.

Considering the Reds went after Shaqiri, who cost much less than Fekir’s asking price, one can’t help but think that it was the asking price that played a hand in the deal going cold.

Is it worth going after Fekir?

Though Fekir has an alarming injury history, he is still only 24 and showed what he is capable of last season. Playing as an attacking midfielder, Fekir scored 18 goals and assisted eight more and seems like a player who can score at will even from midfield.

Liverpool haven’t replaced Philippe Coutinho yet as Oxlade-Chamberlain is a different sort of player. Fekir, with his ability to pick a pass and dribble past opposition defences, could be the ideal player Liverpool need against teams who will play a low-block.

He didn’t play a prominent role for France in the World Cup, but every time Deschamps gave him a few minutes, he gave a good account of himself.

Liverpool already have a fearsome front three and with players like Fekir, Fabinho and Keita behind, the Reds could be an unstoppable force next season and finally challenge City and United for the league title.
