Arsenal linked with veteran Serie A star: A good addition to the club?

Premier League giants Arsenal are said to have a deal in place for Stephan Lichtsteiner, according to reports. The Juventus defender, who was earlier linked with a move to Borussia Dortmund, will be available for a free transfer this summer. The right-back is out of contract with the Old Lady at the end of the season.

Arsenal, who are expected to undergo a massive squad overhaul this summer, following the arrival of new head coach Unai Emery, have shown keen interest in the Swiss international.

With Emery reportedly looking for a new defender, who can cover Hector Bellerin in the right-back position, the addition of Stephan Lichtsteiner could prove to be a smart move by the Gunners.

In fact, Italian news outlet, Gianluca Di Marzio claims that Lichsteiner, himself, wants the deal to be wrapped before the start of the upcoming FIFA World Cup. Having been selected in the Swiss national team, Lichtsteiner is expected to play a huge role for his team in the coveted tournament.

Arsenal, on the other hand, are hugely decimated in the defensive department, especially after the retirement of veteran skipper Per Mertesacker. The former Hannover defender has joined the Arsenal youth staff after calling an end to his professional career.

In addition, the younger defenders in the likes of Calum Chambers and Rob Holding have also failed to step up their game to the next level this season, meaning the addition of an experienced defender is imperative for the Gunners.

Therefore, the North-London giants should definitely make a move for Stephan Lichtsteiner. Highly regarded as one of the most successful Swiss defenders in the past decade or so, Lichtsteiner is definitely someone who can solidify Arsenal’s defence.

Why Lichsteiner to Arsenal is a good move

Since his move to Turin in the summer of 2011, Stephan Lichtsteiner has played a critical role in Juventus’ success, winning as many as seven Serie A titles along with four Italian league cups. The 34-year-old has also secured three Italian super cups and helped his team reach the final of the UEFA Champions League.

Making almost 400 top-flight appearances in Italian football, Lichtsteiner has ample amount of experience, which can definitely help him settle into the Premier League.

Arsenal have lacked the services of a proper back-up for the stunning Hector Bellerin in the right-back position. Therefore, the addition of Stephan Lichtsteiner will provide them with the much-needed depth in the defensive department. In addition, his vast experience will also help the younger talents whilst improving Arsenal’s performances, especially on the big stage.
