8 Goals And 12 Assists: Why West Ham United Should Hand A Second Chance To On-loan Attacker

Robert Snodgrass’ stay following his €12 million move from Norwich City in the winter last season was cut short with The Hammers after he was sent out on loan to Aston Villa. His premature departure from the London club came as a result of his poor displays in the second half of last season’s League campaign where he managed only 2 assists in 15 games.

He was brought in by Slaven Bilic after his stellar first half of the season with Hull City where he bagged 7 goals and 3 assists.

But his performances startlingly dried up at the London Stadium and left many pondering the Scottish International’s ability.

2017/18 Season With Aston Villa

Robert Snodgrass sprung back into life following his loan move to the Villans. Even though not in the Top 2, Aston Villa are still in the play-off spots with an opportunity to reclaim Premier League status after a 2-year gap.

The Claret and Blue sit at 4th in the table behind the leading pack of Wolves, Cardiff and Fulham. In his 34 appearances this term, Snodgrass has notched up 8 goals and 12 assists.

With still 8 games to play, Snodgrass will be determined to help Aston Villa gain promotion to the Premier and hope that his performances catch David Moyes’ eye.

A deserved second chance?

Does Snodgrass deserve another bite at the cherry? Given his recent form, the Scottish international has shown more than once why he deserves another chance with The Hammers.

He is not a player who performs only in the second tier of English football having shown his capabilities with Norwich prior to his move to West Ham. Much of his downfall could be attributed in the way Slaven Bilic and his team went ahead with proceedings.

West Ham did not seem to have any sort of cohesiveness about them and much of this boils down to their manager trying out everything without the right vision. The Croatian manager often tweaked the formation and the system. In such a scenario it is difficult for a player to adapt to life quickly at a new club, with a point to note that he had no pre-season with West Ham.

Moyes’ plans for the future

Reports suggested that the ex-Manchester United boss attempted to bring Snodgrass back to West Ham following his recent performances, but the move eventually faded away. One could imagine that with a pre-season available for both the player and the manager, Snodgrass could be admitted back into West Ham’s main 11.

The Londoners also fall short in the right wing position. Snodgrass is a player who thrives on the right wing and possesses a lethal left foot. These are qualities that only Snodgrass ticks in this current West Ham squad and hence a possible second stint is surely on the cards.
