Celtic Keen To Sign 22 Y/O Welsh Defender: A Shrewd Move By Rodgers?

According to a recent report by Birmingham Mail, Celtic are keeping close tabs on Yeovil Town defender, Tom James. James has dazzled in League Two this season and his performances seem to have attracted the attention of the Scottish giants. Apart from the Celts, Aston Villa are also monitoring him closely.

Celtic have mustered another commendable season in the domestic arena. Under the tutelage of Brendan Rodgers, the Glasgow giants clinched the domestic treble last season and are on the verge of a similar feat yet again. With the League Cup and Scottish Premiership title already in their bag, they made their way into the finals of the Scottish Cup after beating Rangers 4-0 at Hampden Park on Sunday.

Rodgers must be keen to strengthen his arsenal in the summer and one of the areas he will be keen to enhance is his defence. On plenty of occasions, the Bhoys have appeared to be timorous at the back and there has been apparent lack of required personnel to cater to their defensive needs. So, their desire to sign James in the summer makes a lot of sense.

The 22-year-old was lured to the Huish Park from the ranks of Cardiff City in the January transfer window of 2017. He has been a decent package for the Glovers and Yeovil Town manager, Darren Way, has instilled immense confidence in him. James has notched up 45 appearances across all competitions so far this season and has been one of the most regular players in the starting line-up of Way.

Rodgers is renowned for banking upon youngsters and this might tempt James to make a move to the Celtic Park in the summer. Under his tutelage, the likes of Moussa Dembele, Kieran Tierney, Kristoffer Ajer and Jack Hendry have managed to blossom tremendously and the primary reason of the same has been the confidence shown by the former Liverpool manager on the starlets he has had at his disposal.

On the other hand, Aston Villa are very much in the race for promotion to the Premier League and irrespective of whether the Villans get promoted or not, moving to Aston Villa will be a mark of uplift for James. Thus, it will not be easy for Celtic to make him sign on the dotted line as the Lions might tempt James to stay in England.

Any possible developments on this front will be worth monitoring over the summer.
