Tottenham’s Toby Alderweireld has had a troubled season so far. The centre-back was out with a hamstring injury from November last season to mid-March and after his return, he hasn’t been able to impress Mauricio Pochettino and return to the first team.
Alderweireld’s contract has a clause that could let him go for as less as 25 million pounds in the summer of 2019 and Spurs wouldn’t want to lose him for that fee when they can sell him for a higher price in the upcoming transfer window.
We look at three clubs who should make the move and sign him…
The Blaugrana sold Javier Mascherano a few months ago and though they signed Yerry Mina, they’ll need to strengthen their defence as Real Madrid will bounce back next season and will themselves sign a few quality players.
That, coupled with Samuel Umtiti’s release clause which is 60 million Euros, means they can’t just afford to sit silently in the summer.
Alderweireld would be a solid addition for the Blaugrana as he is a good passer of the ball and can read the ball well. He also has the experience of playing in the La Liga as he had a spell with Atletico Madrid.
No one apart from Eric Bailly has impressed consistently in the Manchester United colours. The defence has done okay but that is largely due to the pragmatic approach of Mourinho and the presence of Nemanja Matic in midfield.
The Serb offers the protection to the back four and even Paul Pogba has shed his attacking instincts to play a more cautious game.
If United had two good defenders, then maybe they could be a little more proactive. Who better that Alderweireld? He has the experience of playing in the top flight and would be the ideal foil for Bailly. Man City will take some stopping next season and United will substantially be strengthened at the back with the addition of Alderweireld.
A switch from Spurs to Chelsea would be controversial, nut unlike Spurs, the Blues can break their wage structure to pay the Belgian a few thousand quid more and give him regular game time. Since Terry’s departure, the Chelsea backline hasn’t been the same.
Azpilicueta and Christensen have done a good job, but the rest have been inconsistent. Alderweireld could be the player to complete the back three and make Conte’s side the defensive rock they were last season while winning the Premier League title with weeks to spare.
