Tottenham Hotspur Identify Swansea Star As First Summer Signing: Good Fit For Pochettino?

Tottenham Hotspur are one of the most exciting teams not just in England but also in Europe. They are well on course to qualify for the Champions League next season and also have a shot at the FA Cup, now that they are into the semi-finals of the competition. However, Mauricio Pochettino is not convinced with the squad at his disposal and is looking to make some exciting additions in the upcoming transfer window.

A number of star players have constantly been linked with a move to the club and the latest name doing the rounds is Alfie Mawson.

Spurs To Move For Mawson

According to reports from The Sun, Mauricio Pochettino is determined to land English international Alfie Mawson for the next season. Also wanted by the likes of West Ham United, the Swansea City defender has been in decent form this season and could cost around £25m this summer. Is he the right man for Spurs?

Mawson And His Growth

A product of the Reading academy, Mawson moved to the English Premier League for the first time with Swansea City at the start of the previous season and took no time to establish himself in the first team, making 57 league appearances already for his side. He has represented the England U21s six times already in his career and has been called up of the senior side by Gareth Southgate, who is expected to take him to Russia as well for the World Cup.

A strong and dominating centre-half, who rarely misses anything in the air, the 24-year old is an athletic defender who loves to throw himself around inside his box. He is an excellent passer and is also confident with the ball at his feet but what makes him a solid defender is his ability to read the game and stay a step ahead of the opponents.

At his age, he has already gathered a lot of experience and his progress in the last couple of years shows that he is ready to compete with the best. He is destined to play for a bigger club and Spurs are as good an option as any.

Good Fit For Spurs?

Pochettino’s history of polishing potential talent into world class superstars will certainly attract Mawson but what will play into the defender’s hands is the fact that Spurs could lose star defender Toby Alderweireld this summer.

The Belgian international is unhappy with his situation at Wembley at the moment and has extensively been linked with an exit at the end of the season. Pochettino seems to have given up on extending his deal and sees Mawson as an able replacement in the first team.

The English ace may not be able to replace Alderweireld’s experience but he can certainly take over his legacy and cement his place in the first team at the club for years to come. But do you think he is the right man for Spurs?
