Aston Villa In Pursuit Of Premier League Defender: Just What Bruce Needs?

As per reports by Birmingham Mail, Aston Villa are believed to be interested in signing West Bromwich Albion central defender, Craig Dawson, in the summer. Dawson has emerged as one of the most sought-after players of late and considering West Brom’s league position, it won’t be a surprise if he moves.

Fact File

The centre-back started his senior career with Radcliffe Borough and then moved to the ranks of Rochdale. He signed a contract with them in 2010 and was immediately loaned out to Rochdale for the entire 2010-11 campaign. After his return, he was used sporadically and was once again shipped out on loan to Bolton Wanderers in the January transfer window of 2013. Ever since then, he has featured regularly for West Bromwich Albion after his impressive loan spells.

Season So Far

Dawson has had a good season despite the stuttering form of the West Brom backline. The 27-year-old has made 21 appearances so far in the Premier League, none of which have been as a substitute, and he has mustered 1.1 tackles, 2 interceptions, 4 clearances and 0.9 blocks per game. Besides, he has plundered a couple of goals as well.

Attributes

The centre-back is a good defender and has the experience of English football under his belt. He is good in the air and can do a good job at the back in terms of reading the game and making the tackles. Dawson might not be an astute passer of the ball and needs improve that aspect of his game, but he is more than a decent package for any English top flight or Championship side.

Why do Aston Villa Need Him?

Under the tutelage of Steve Bruce, Aston Villa have fared well and are in contention for promotion to the Premier League. While James Chester and John Terry have been the first-choice centre-back pairing for the Villans this season, Bruce must be looking for a long-term replacement for Terry as he is on the wrong side of thirties. Thus, Aston Villa should try to bring Dawson to Villa Park in the summer irrespective of whether they get promoted or not to beef up their defensive options for the upcoming season.
