Aston Villa Star To Take A Call On His Future In May: How Important Is He For Bruce?

Aston Villa are unarguably one of the favourites to get promoted to the Premier League. They are currently placed at the 2nd spot in the league standings with 59 points to their name from 31 games. Steve Bruce has shepherded his troops meticulously and his men have engineered the required output more often than not this campaign to make their presence felt.

One of the players who has been a pivotal part of their setup has been John Terry. Terry moved to the Villa Park in the summer after his contract with Chelsea ran out. Bruce did manage to pull a rabbit out of his hat by signing Terry and he has been handsomely rewarded. Terry has formed an excellent partnership with James Chester at the heart of Aston Villa’s defence and his leadership traits have also been fairly evident.

He has mustered 21 appearances in the second tier so far this season, having notched up 0.8 tackles, 1.4 interceptions, 6.8 clearances and 0.8 blocks per game on an average. Intriguingly, the Lions have conceded merely 6 goals in their last 9 games in which the former Chelsea skipper has played and it is a testament to the fact that he still has what it takes to play competitive football.

Terry’s contract with Bruce’s side expires at the end of the season and as per one of the latest reports by the Telegraph, the centre-back has decided against taking a decision on his future until May. It is further reported that Terry and Aston Villa have a mutual option to extend his stay for a further period of 12 months to his current £60,000-a-week contract.

It would be interesting to see what the Englishman decides but the club must leave no stone unturned to keep him in their ranks. Terry has been a stupendous player throughout his career and has 227 clean sheets to his name in English football. He has been a serial winner, for he has 5 Premier League, 5 FA Cup, 1 Champions League and 1 Europa League winners’ medal to his name.

Every side needs a galvanizing player in their arsenal who sets himself up as an example, has the respect of his teammates and thrives with the mentality to win every game and Terry is the one who has majorly infused the aforesaid elements into his relatively young Aston Villa teammates. Irrespective of whether Aston Villa get promoted or not, it would be wise on their part to make sure that Terry gives his consent to an extension.
