Tottenham Hotspur set to swoop for Brazilian winger: A smart move by Pochettino?

As per reports from Sky Sports, Tottenham Hotspur are looking to sign Bordeaux youngster, Malcom, in the upcoming January transfer window to beef up their attacking arsenal. The 20-year-old has really emerged as one of the hottest properties of the game and apart from Spurs, it is also believed that other top European clubs like Manchester United and Bayern Munich are also keeping a close eye on him.

After what has transpired in the last few months, it is pretty clear that Manchester City are running away with the league, having dropped points just twice out of 22 games. However, the race for bagging a top-four finish is going to heat up further in the coming months as the likes of Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool are going to provide tough competition to Spurs and no wonder Mauricio Pochettino wants to bring in reinforcements this month.

What about Malcom?

Malcom could be an excellent addition to the side, as he has the potential to add more pace to Spurs’ attack. Having emerged through the youth ranks of Corinthians, the Brazilian was signed by Bordeaux in the January transfer window of 2016 for a fee which is believed to be in the region of £9million. Malcom has been exceptional with the Girondins this season, having smashed 7 goals and registered 4 assists in 18 Ligue 1 appearances, thus upping his price tag.

He has raw pace and one of the striking aspects of his calibre is the manner he holds onto the ball. The starlet likes to dribbles, crosses the ball neatly, more often than not, into the box and tests the oppositions’ goalkeepers with his fierce shots. His output has proved that he can be a good goalscoring winger, something Spurs would need as they have relied on Harry Kane to do the scoring more often than not.

The right-wing is one of the areas where Spurs need to strengthen and Malcom would be an ideal choice. However, Bordeaux are believed to have slapped a price tag of around £50million for the winger, which is a humungous sum of money for a player who doesn’t have much experience under his belt.

Nonetheless, it would be interesting to see how things pan out from here. It’s not easy signing players in the January window considering how overpriced they are. It’s likely that Bordeaux will settle for something less than £50million, so it’s up to Daniel Levy and co to get the deal done by paying the appropriate fee.
