As this year’s January transfer window is nearing its closure with just a couple of days remaining before the clubs can settle their transfer business, we take a look at the top 3 winter transfer signings of all time by some of Premier League heavyweights.
In this edition, we’ll take a look at how Arsenal have managed to pull off transfer bargains over the years.
The Gunners aren’t actually known for their winter transfer window activity, therefore, it was difficult to nail down their top three businesses. However, there have been some smart decisions made by the Gunners in January, over the years so here are the top three winter transfer signings of all time made by Arsenal!
[Author’s note: I’ve chosen not to count transfers from pre-Premier League era, therefore, transfers made before the 1992-93 season has been blatantly excluded!]
3. Nacho Monreal – January 2013
When Arsene Wenger decided to boost his options in the left-back position in the winter of 2013 and he signed Nacho Monreal from Malaga for a fee of €10m, it was met with a lot of pessimism among the Arsenal faithful, largely due to his rather hefty price-tag and lack of experience in the Premier League.
However, fast forward to five years and Nacho has become one of the pillars of the current Arsenal defence. The Spaniard has played a host of roles for the North-Londoners.
This season, in particular, the 31-year-old has featured as a centre-back for almost the entirety of the season so far. His experience and composure in the backline have significantly helped Arsenal to remain solid in their defensive phases.
In addition, Nacho Monreal is still expected to be a key part of Arsenal’s nigh future and will, therefore, remain as one of the best winter businesses done by the Gunners in living memory.
