According to a recent report by The Sun, Southampton are believed to be interested in signing Spartak Moscow winger, Quincy Promes, to beef up their attacking arsenal this month. Sky Sports have reported that the Saints will have to shell out a hefty transfer fee of £30million to lure him out of the Otlrytie Arena.
The 26-year-old is contracted with the Red and Whites until the summer of 2021 and is highly rated by his side as he played an instrumental role in their Russian Premier League win last season. The Saints, in order to bring him to St. Mary’s, will have to surpass their £18.1million club-record transfer fee which they paid to sign Mario Lemina from Juventus last summer.
Promes emerged through the youth ranks of Ajax, Haarlem and Twente, before being promoted to their senior side. He was shipped out on loan to Go Ahead Eagles for a season during his stay with the Dutch side. Eventually, he was made to sign on the dotted line by Spartak Moscow in the summer of 2014.
The 26-year-old is a player of dazzling calibre and is now approaching the peak of his career. Promes has had a scintillating season so far in the Russian top flight, having made 17 appearances in which he has smashed 10 goals and has also registered 6 assists. Besides, he has also scored 2 goals in 5 appearances in the Champions League as well.
Promes is a really versatile player and is equally effective as a striker or as a winger. He is someone who is constantly on the lookout to score goals and has the vision to create adequate number of goal-scoring opportunities for his teammates. Besides, he holds the ball well, be it anywhere on the pitch, and his finishing skill is top class.
The Dutch international is a good crosser of the ball and is more often than not on target with his attempts. Arguably, he needs to cater to the defensive duties a bit more if his move to the Premier League materialises, but apart from that, he is a complete package.
Mauricio Pellegrino’s side do have the funds after sanctioning Virgil van Dijk’s £75million move to Liverpool earlier this month, and it would be wise if they use it to make the requisite additions. Promes would be able to bring some freshness to Southampton and with the experience he has accumulated and the attacking tooth he has showcased so far in his career, he would be a welcome addition to Pellegrino’s ranks.
