Newcastle United, after their promotion, have been clear about the future of their veteran midfielder, Jack Colback. Under the tutelage of Rafael Benitez, the Geordies are currently at the 13th spot in the league table with 22 points to their name after 22 games and are in quest of making some requisite ramifications in the ongoing transfer window. But it’s pretty clear that Colback is not part of Rafa’s plans.
Ever since the start of the season, Colback has been serially overlooked by Benitez, as he believes that the midfielder is surplus to the requirements. Putting that into perspective, Colback hasn’t been handed even a single appearance in the Premier League or the cup competitions and it goes without saying that his days at St. James’ Park are numbered. So what does the future has in store for the 28-year-old?
As per one of the latest reports by the Birmingham Mail, he is a subject of interest from Championship outfit, Leeds United, although Aston Villa are also believed to be keeping a close eye on him. Colback pockets a handsome wage of £40,000 per week and the Toon are keen to strike him off their books to free some space for the additions they are looking to make.
Leeds are one of the sides which are looking for promotion to the top tier this season. They are sixth in the league table with 43 points from 26 games. Thomas Christiansen is inclined to beef up his arsenal this January and their apparent interest to sign Colback does make sense, for he helped Newcastle earn a promotion to the Premier League last season.
Though he scored no goal and created just 11 chances in 28 appearances last season, his work ethic was immense and he is a pretty versatile midfielder as he can fill in the fullback spots if required.
He is a player who has truckloads of experience under his belt and could add a lot of value to Leeds, especially in the Championship. Leeds have conceded 28 goals in 26 games, so Colback could add a bit more defensive solidity in the midfield.
He hasn’t played much, so he will take some time to get used to the roughness of the Championship, but it’s nothing he can’t handle. Still only 28, he has a few good years left in him, so he’d be a good signing in the long run as well.
