Everton keen on signing Chelsea outcast: A wise move by Sam Allardyce?

Everton might have sanctioned the sale of Ross Barley to Chelsea earlier this month but they have shown a lot of desire so far in the transfer window as they want to ensure there is enough quality in the squad. The Toffees have concluded the signings of Theo Walcott and Cenk Tosun from Arsenal and Besiktas, respectively, and the two are more than capable of adding potency to the frontline.

However, their recent interest to sign Baba Rahman, as per one of the recent reports by The Sun, raises a lot of eyebrows. Everton do need cover for Leighton Baines and have thus put Rahman on their radar. Cuco Martina has hardly met the expectations and with Baines not getting any younger, the need to add a full-back is imperative.

The 23-year-old left-back was signed by Chelsea from FC Augsburg in the summer of 2015, but he has not been able to cement his place in the playing XI. So far in his career with the reigning English champions, Rahman has played merely 15 games in the English top flight, which perfectly sums up his slow start at Stamford Bridge.

The Ghana international is a modern-day fullback who loves to gallop forward and has the potential to be an attacking threat from the wide areas. But he has been questioned, more often than not, for falling behind in the defensive aspects of the game. He has been caught out of position time and again, something which he really has to work on.

Rahman is, however, someone who works really hard and has a good burst of pace. Right now in his career, he must be looking to get more time on the pitch and a loan deal away from Chelsea could prove to be beneficial for him. Sam Allardyce’s side have hit a rough spell in terms of results in the last month or so and some more reinforcements, especially at the back, could help them move up the table.

So far this season, Rahman hasn’t played for Chelsea after regaining full fitness following a cruciate ligament injury. Everton’s apparent interest in signing him on loan is a gamble considering he has failed to make an impact. But then again, the Toffees need someone in that position, so better sign someone, rather than playing a right-back as a left-back!
