Chelsea To Rival Manchester United For £35m Rated Brazilian: Should Conte Pursue This Deal?

The Speculation

As per one of the latest reports by the Sun, Chelsea have put Gremio midfielder, Arthur Melo, on their radar and are desirous to make him sign on the dotted line this month. However, it would not be easy for them, as their Premier League rivals, Manchester United are also understood to be quite interested in luring him to the Old Trafford.

Career So Far

Melo emerged through the youth ranks of Goias and Gremio and was eventually promoted to the senior side of the latter. He has been an instrumental player for the Immortal Tricolor, having featured 28 times in Brasileirao and on 8 occasions in Copa Libertadores.

The Brazilian is unarguably one of the hottest prospects in Brazilian football and no wonder big clubs in Europe are monitoring him. He dictates the game well from the middle of the park, is a shrewd passer of the ball and reads the game exceptionally well, considering his age.

Controversy

Melo was also linked to La Liga giants, Barcelona, and as per the reports, he met Barca’s sporting director, Robert Fernandez to facilitate his move to Camp Nou. However, he was surrounded by animosity from his current club after he was pictured wearing Barcelona’s shirt, which angered his club.

Gremio found it hurtful and derogatory and are keen to let him leave for a Premier League club for around £35million but are reluctant to sell him to Barcelona. However, it is unlikely that the Spanish outfit would want to sign him after having acquired the services of Philippe Coutinho earlier this month for £145million.

Why Are Chelsea Interested?

One might be familiar with the plethora of stars that the Blues have at their disposal but Antonio Conte’s side are apparently looking for someone who has the potential to replace their veteran star, Cesc Fabregas, a few years down the line.

Melo, although primarily being a central defensive midfielder, is capable of plying his trade as a central attacking midfielder and thus, he certainly offers versatility.

Pros And Cons

One thing Chelsea might ponder upon is his lack of experience of English football and that he is still an unpolished gem. Manchester City are running away with the Premier League title and if the Blues are to impose a strong competition for them, they would need proven players.

Nonetheless, he does have immense qualities as a midfielder and has made steady progress in his career so far. Be it for the future or to meet immediate requirements, he would probably be a risk worth taking.
