West Ham United plotting audacious move for German star: Do they really need him?

West Ham United are on their way to being one of the busiest clubs in England, in the winter transfer market as the new manager David Moyes will get his first shot at adding to the squad he acquired at the London Stadium. The manager is desperate to add numbers to his attack and has been linked with a number of exciting talents recently.

One name now doing the rounds is German star Andre Schurrle.

Transfer story

According to reports from The Guardian, West Ham United are ready to recall young Reece Oxford from his loan spell at Borussia Monchengladbach. However, the more interesting part of the story for the West Ham fans is the claim that they will make a move for Schurrle.

The report suggests that the Hammers are ready to offer the 27-year old a chance to revive his career in England, ahead of the World Cup next year and have reportedly opened talks with the German outfit over a loan move for the player. Is he a decent option for the Hammers?

Schurrle and his numbers

A product of the Mainz Academy in Germany, the versatile attacker spent a couple of years at the Stamford Bridge, where he managed 11 goals in 44 league appearances but failed to cement a place in the first team. He moved back to the Bundesliga with Wolfsburg in 2015 and then to the Signal Iduna Park in 2016 but is yet to establish himself in the first team at the club.

He has made just two starts across all competitions this season and is desperate for some game time and will be a decent option for the Hammers. At just 27, he already 197 Bundesliga appearances where he has 50 goals and 33 assists to his name in his career.

He also has six goals and three assists in 39 UCL appearances and 22 goals in 57 international appearances and is an established star in Europe. He can play anywhere in attack and his technical ability and creativity in front of goal, will be a decent addition to most of the top clubs in Europe.

What will he add to West Ham?

However, it is slightly debatable if he is the man Moyes needs in January. The likes of Marko Arnautovic, Andrew Ayew and Michail Antonio all play a similar role at the club while the likes of Andy Carroll and Javier Hernandez are expected to add goals to the side.

Though they have failed to find consistency, West Ham have a decent attacking lineup and if Moyes wants to add fresh faces, he will do well to add a different dimension to his attack. An outright winger, a skilful playmaker or a gifted finisher: Players like these are what the Hammers are missing in attack and though Schurrle will add some quality in front of goal, it is better for West Ham to spend on a player who can transform the chemistry of the entire squad.

Do you think Schurrle is a player they need this January?
