Newcastle United And Manchester City Stars Amongst The Top 3 Players Of Matchweek 5

Yet another week of the Premier League ended as most of the big guns failed to fire. Chelsea and Arsenal played out a goalless draw as Tottenham Hotspur played a stalemate against Swansea. Liverpool were held to a 1-1 scoreline by Burnley.

On the other hand, the top two title contenders of the season, Manchester United and Manchester City came up with enthralling wins. City demolished Watford by scoring six goals and conceded none. The Red Devils won 4-0 against Ronald Koeman’s Everton with some superb late strikes by the attackers.

AFC Bournemouth finally looked to be taking off with a 2-1 win over Brighton & Hove Albion. West Ham and West Brom failed to score even a single goal as their match ended 0-0. There were many good individual performances throughout the course of the week, which makes choosing three standout performers difficult.

Hence, the three players would be divided into three categories; one each from the defence, midfield, and attack. So, here are our three best players from the fifth matchweek of this season.

Best Defender- Jamaal Lascelles

The captain looks determined to do something special with his side this season. He has the ability to do so and has expressed the desire while playing. For the second time this season, Lascelles scored the winning header, which makes it three consecutive wins for Newcastle.

He has been very influential both while defending as well as while attacking. His defensive work ethic has been impressive too as he made six crucial clearances in the match before heading the winner.

Rafa Benitez might expect that his captain continues his rich vein of form.

Notable Mentions: Lukasz Fabianski (Goalkeeper), Antonio Valencia

Best Midfielder- David Silva

The Spaniard playmaker remains a vital cog in Pep Guardiola’s team. Silva orchestrated the attacks from the centre of the park and hardly committed any mistakes. He was very intelligent with his passing and made some decisive deliveries into the box.

Silva played a wider role than usual which helped City dominate the flanks against Watford. His timely runs combined with some accurate crosses made it easy for City’s forwards to pounce on them. Silva made five key passes in the opposition’s half in which two of them resulted in assists.

David Silva’s incredible work rate makes it easier for Jesus and Sergio Aguero to play forward and create goals.

Notable Mentions: Andrew Surman, Juan Mata

Best Forward- Sergio Aguero

Sergio Aguero was at his best when City took on Watford. He looked a desperate striker hungry for goals and did not disappoint anyone. The Argentine rarely put a foot wrong in the whole game and was extremely clinical.

His link-up play with Gabriel Jesus was a delight to watch, as it was a perfect example of youth and experience combining well. Aguero scored his sixth Premier League hat-trick in the process and dismantled a hapless Watford team. He even managed to rack up an assist, which shows the kind of form he is in. Aguero looks to put behind an entire summer of intense speculation of him leaving the Etihad.

Guardiola looks to be placing a lot of faith on the Argentine now, which has boosted the striker’s confidence. Inarguably, Sergio Aguero was the best player on the pitch during the whole weekend.

Notable Mentions: Christian Atsu, Romelu Lukaku
