Tottenham Hotspur Asked To Pay €50m For Real Madrid Midfielder: Should Levy Cough Up The Fee?

tottenham hotspur

Tottenham Hotspur are keen on adding a few quality players to their squad to bridge the gap with Manchester City and Liverpool in the Premier League and are closing in on their first signing, Jack Clarke. But, it looks like they will see one huge name leave the club in the summer as Christian Eriksen has voiced his desire to part ways with the Lilywhites. There are reports that Real Madrid are keen on signing the Danish midfielder and that they could offer Marco Asensio in exchange.

Tottenham are reportedly interested in another Real Madrid player, 22-year-old Spanish midfielder Dani Ceballos. A report states that the Spanish giants will seek at least €50 million for the talented midfielder, according to AS. Madrid want to get rid of a few players to balance the books following the arrival of several players, including Eden Hazard from Chelsea.

AC Milan are also rumoured to be interested in signing Ceballos but want to sign him on a two-year loan deal, which Madrid aren’t keen on as they want to sell the player on a permanent transfer ahead of the season.

Ceballos joined the Spanish club in 2017 for €18 million and his current contract with the club expires in 2023. The Spanish midfielder has been a bit-part player at Real Madrid since he signed with them, mostly coming off the bench for Los Blancos. Ceballos made 34 appearances in all competitions for Madrid in the 2018-19 season, scoring thrice and providing two assists in the campaign.

The 22-year-old also made his Spanish national team debut last year, and has gone on to make 6 appearances for the national side.

Should Spurs cough up the fee?

Spurs certainly need to buy a central midfielder as one of their star players in that position, Christian Eriksen, is set to leave the club. Ceballos could be a good fit at Spurs but he isn’t the finished article yet. The Spanish midfielder could flourish and grow in the coming seasons under Mauricio Pochettino if he does move to Spurs.

But paying €50 million for a player who has been on the bench for the majority of the year at Real Madrid, and who hasn’t really had a great season, doesn’t make financial sense especially for Daniel Levy who is known to be strict with his finances. Perhaps Ceballos could be used in the Eriksen deal, but only if Madrid offer Ceballos as well as a transfer fee to take the Danish midfielder to the Bernabeu.
