Tottenham Hotspur closing in on fleet-footed winger: Pros and cons of signing him

Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly set to make Leeds United’s Jack Clarke their first signing of the summer.

The Premier League side reached an agreement with Leeds for a fee of around £8.5 million, as per Standard.

Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino wants to give the 18-year-old attacker first-team opportunities in the 2019-20 season following Clarke’s transfer to the London club.

Clarke was a part of Leeds’ youth set-up before being added to the first-team squad in January 2018, but made his debut a few months later in October 2018.

In the 2018-19 season, Clarke played 25 games, starting 5 times for the Championship side, scoring twice and assisting twice as Leeds missed out on promotion to the Premier League.

In his very first year with the senior team, Clarke won the Leeds United Young Player of the Year award.

With Tottenham to make the signing of Jack Clarke, let’s take a look at the pros and cons of signing the teenager:

Pros

Clarke is very good for his age and has shown that he has tremendous potential to become a future star in the Premier League.

Pochettino has developed several youngsters and given them opportunities to flourish and become very good players in the Premier League.

The teenager is a very quick player with great close control and dribbling ability. His pace would be a welcome addition to the Spurs team, which has, at times, lacked directness and quick counter-attacking play.

Clarke is a player who can quickly get up to full speed and control his pace, confusing the defenders as to what his next move is going to be.

At £8.5 million, Clarke is a steal as there are very few young wingers who are available at that price, that too when sold to a Premier League side.

Cons

Clarke, at times, can be frustrating as he tries to beat his opponent one too many times.

It also remains to be seen if he can cope up with the much more physical style of the Premier League as he has still not physically strong.

Like most young attackers, he is yet to learn to defend well, which could be an area of concern.
