Brentford are reportedly exploring a loan deal for Tottenham Hotspur left-back Sergio Reguilon.
The Spaniard, 27, has returned to Spurs after an uneventful six-month loan spell with Manchester United, where he made 12 appearances across all competitions. He made just seven starts in all competitions for Erik ten Hag’s side, with the last of these coming during the shock 3-0 home defeat by Bournemouth in December. With Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia closing in on a return from injuries, Man United decided to terminate the 27-year-old’s loan spell at the start of this month.
According to the Daily Mail, Brentford are in talks with Tottenham over a loan move for Sergio Reguilon, as manager Thomas Frank looks to bolster his left-back options for the second half of the ongoing campaign.
The report adds the Bees have also looked at Marseille’s Renan Lodi, who is joining cash-rich Saudi Arabian club Al Hilal, and Leicester City’s Luke Thomas, who cancelled his loan at Sheffield United by mutual consent last week.
Sergio Reguilon to Brentford—Smart choice?
As new Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou decided to use Destiny Udogie as his first-choice left-back, Sergio Reguilon was sent out on loan to Manchester United. However, the Mancunian giants have cut short the left-back’s loan earlier in the transfer window.
The Spaniard has fallen down the pecking order at Spurs in the last couple of years and is not part of Ange Postecoglou’s plans moving forward. Another departure looks like the most likely outcome for Reguilon, who wants to play regularly to return to his best form. He is now considering his options after returning to North London, with many clubs showing an interest.
Brentford manager Thomas Frank is keen on signing Reguilon until the end of the season and all parties are now locked in talks to get a deal done. The Bees have been expected to bolster their left-back options this transfer window following Rico Henry’s serious knee injury, which he sustained in September, ruling him out for the rest of this season.
Aaron Hickey is also expected to miss the remainder of January with a thigh problem, while Saman Ghoddos—who has been deployed as an emergency full-back over the festive period—is representing Iran at the Asian Cup. Reguilon, in that regard, could be ideal for Brentford. The 27-year-old is an experienced campaigner and he could immediately make a positive impact for Thomas Frank’s side. The Spaniard can operate as a left-back and left wing-back, and such versatility would make him a smart fit at the Gtech Community Stadium.
Given the Bees have become embroiled in a relegation dogfight, they need a few quality additions through the door this month to help them maintain their top-flight status. And Reguilon, on a six-month loan, should be a wise signing for Brentford.
