Scott McTominay on sale—3 clubs who should make a move

brighton lineup

Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay could reportedly leave Old Trafford this summer.

The Scotland international, 26, put in some good performances for the Red Devils last season but found consistent game time difficult to come by after the arrivals of Christian Eriksen and Casemiro. And with the Mancunian giants splashing £55m for signing Mason Mount from Chelsea earlier this month, he could now see his game time diminish even further.

According to The Manchester Evening News (h/t The Metro), Manchester United will let Scott McTominay leave for the right price as it would arm Erik ten Hag with the funds needed to reinvest in overhauling his midfield unit.

Ten Hag is an admirer of McTominay’s qualities on and off the ball and wants to keep him over Fred and Donny van de Beek. However, with little interest in Van de Beek and Fred entering the final year of his contract, McTominay possesses greater selling power. The report adds Man United value the Scottish midfielder at around £40m.

With McTominay put on sale by the Red Devils, here are three clubs who should make a move.

#West Ham

Declan Rice joined Arsenal from West Ham in a £105m deal on Sunday and now David Moyes is charged with putting those funds to sign a replacement this summer.

Moyes is an admirer of Scott McTominay, who is among several names who could leave Man United in the ongoing window. While McTominay and Rice are not a like-for-like swap, the Scotland international possesses a lot of physical and transitional attributes of the former West Ham star.

The Man United midfielder is certainly good enough for West Ham, and getting more regular game time next season could be a huge factor in joining Moyes’ side if they come officially calling for his signature.

#Newcastle United

Scott McTominay has been linked with a move to Newcastle United since the turn of the year.

The Magpies have made a statement of intent ahead of their long-awaited return to the Champions League by signing Sandro Tonali from AC Milan. Yet, they still remain in the market for midfield reinforcements, and an experienced player like McTominay would fit the bill perfectly at St James’ Park.

The Scotsman can play in a variety of roles across the midfield and always gives his 100 per cent on the pitch, a trait that Eddie Howe values in his players. He would improve Newcastle’s starting XI while adding competition within the squad. Plus, a move to Newcastle could represent an exciting project for McTominay as they’ll have Champions League football at St James’ Park next season.

#Burnley

Scott McTominay is certainly one player facing an uncertain future at Old Trafford. The Scotsman lost his place in the starting XI after the arrival of Casemiro last summer. And United have since welcomed Mason Mount to the club.

There is interest from elsewhere in the Premier League, but newly-promoted Burnley should try making a move for the 26-year-old. The Clarets are back with the big boys at the first time of asking, and manager Vincent Kompany will certainly need a few experienced heads in his squad to help the club achieve survival next season.

McTominay could hugely help Burnley with his experience and leadership skills. He could flourish under Kompany’s influence and hold his team’s midfield together. As a low-risk transfer, the Scottish midfielder could be a very worthwhile addition to the Burnley roster.
