Premier League Star Wishes For A Chelsea Move: Should Potter Open Talks?

Brighton star Leandro Trossard has admitted he would love to reunite with Graham Potter at Chelsea in January.

Graham Potter was appointed Chelsea’s manager last month after the sacking of Thomas Tuchel, which was surprising for almost everyone at Brighton. And several of Potter’s former players have been linked with a move to Stamford Bridge.

Leandro Trossard is amongst those, and on being asked whether he would like to follow his manager to Chelsea, the player told Het Niuewsblad: “I have mastered the tricks now. Our coach did leave for Chelsea now but speculations about me following him make no sense.

“If the opportunity arises, I want to go. But I want to play and not sit on the bench.”

Since signing for Brighton from Genk in 2019, Trossard has established himself as one of the exciting players outside of the Premier League’s ‘Big Six’. The Belgian international has become a mainstay in the Seagulls side, racking up 20 goals and 13 assists in 110 appearances.

The 27-year-old has enjoyed a bright start to the new season and is expected to be a part of Roberto Martinez’s Belgium squad for the upcoming World Cup in Qatar.

Leandro Trossard to Chelsea—Should the Blues make a move in January?

Graham Potter has managed just one game at Chelsea—a 1-1 draw with RB Salzburg in the Champions League. The prolonged international break has offered Potter and his coaching staff an opportunity to build relationships with the players available, both on and off the pitch.

With Chelsea previously linked with attacking reinforcements in the summer window, they could enter the market for one in January. Potter should be happy at being reunited with Marc Cucurella at Stamford Bridge, with the Spanish wing-back having swapped Brighton for Chelsea in the summer.

That said, a move for Leandro Trossard makes sense. Trossard was Potter’s second signing at Brighton and the creative midfielder built a strong relationship with the English tactician during their three years together.

Potter utilised the Belgian in a variety of roles—ranging from second striker to wing-back—and having a player with such versatility and whom he can trust should make his signing a non-risky affair. Trossard has earned plenty of plaudits for his displays in the Premier League in recent years, becoming a regular in the Belgium side.

The 27-year-old’s rise at Brighton is there for everyone to see, and as he is out of contract at the end of the season, a cut-price deal in January is something that must appeal to Potter and the Blues. Thus, Chelsea must attempt to make a move for Trossard in January as he could prove to be a shrewd acquisition in the January transfer window.
