Manchester United are now looking to start official talks with FC Barcelona over Frenkie de Jong, as per Fabrizio Romano.
United have been linked with de Jong ever since Erik ten Hag was appointed as their new manager for the upcoming season. It was only recently that the Red Devils announced the departures of Paul Pogba, Nemanja Matic, and Jesse Lingard. Thus, signing a midfielder has become a priority for the former Premier League champions.
Fabrizio Romano has also mentioned that de Jong’s position regarding the transfer has not changed. The player is keen on continuing at Camp Nou and if he has to move, he will only settle for UEFA Champions League football.
Barcelona have valued the 25-year-old at €85 million. Manchester United are well poised to meet the valuation. But, without the player’s willingness, the deal is as good as a dead end.
Barca’s financial situation has put them in a state of bother, much like the last summer. Last time around the Blaugrana were forced to part ways with Lionel Messi due to their swollen wage cap. This time around, a similar situation is knocking at their door and de Jong could become the next casualty.
Is Frenkie de Jong the answer to United’s midfield woes?
Under Erik ten Hag, the former Ajax midfielder shot into prominence. Thus, it is only fair to assume that ten Hag could well be the manager to restore the Dutchman’s best version.
At Barca, de Jong has seen three coaches; Quique Setien, Ronald Koeman, and Xavi. None of the three coaches have managed to find the ideal position for Frenkie. Under Xavi though, he has shown remarkable signs of improvement and wants to continue under him.
There is no doubt that Frenkie would be a good addition to the current United setup. He is at his best when he is a part of a double pivot. Scott McTominay and Fred are the other two options for ten Hag and the 25-year-old could be a good partner for either of them.
This season he has averaged 1.4 key passes and 1.8 dribbles per game. He hasn’t shied away from his defensive chores as well.
Frenkie de Jong is someone who likes space when he has the ball. He likes to play from behind. The reason he has not been able to find success at Barca is that he has been unable to displace Sergio Busquets from the lineup.
Frenkie de Jong is the type of player that United need at the moment and they should go all-out to sign him.
