3 Areas Tottenham Hotspur Need to Strengthen this Summer | Opinion

Tottenham Hotspur eventually managed to secure a Champions League spot after edging their North London rivals Arsenal over the 2021-22 Premier League campaign. The Lilywhites will want to capitalise on this uptick in form and must try to leave no stone unturned to strengthen their squad over the summer transfer window.

They will have to be ambitious in the transfer market if they wish to go to the next level. We take a look at some of the areas Antonio Conte needs to strengthen to challenge the teams above them in the league table.

#1 Right wing-back

Despite numerous attempts, Tottenham have failed and tried to adequately replace Kyle Walker after his move to Manchester City some years ago. None of the right-backs or right-wing-backs since have delivered consistently both offensively and defensively.

The most recent right-back signing, Emerson Royal has also fallen short of expectations and has failed to provide that much-needed width, crossing ability, and defensive security to help Tottenham pick their game up to the next level on the right-hand side of the pitch.

While the jury is out on whether he would continue his upward growth trajectory as witnessed over the last few games this past season, getting another right-back who can directly get into the first team could prove to be crucial to Tottenham’s ambitions next season.

#2 Back up for Harry Kane

Up until now, Tottenham have made do without getting an ideal backup to Harry Kane. There have been times when goals have been hard to come by for the England striker and fatigue has definitely played a big role in rendering Tottenham’s attack toothless in some of the games.

Getting a solid backup for Kane could prove to be key in alleviating problems in absence of either the England international or Son Heung-Min It would be a cherry on top if they could get someone who could cover multiple positions and play out wide as well.

Tottenham certainly need players up top to keep up with the busy schedule and remain competent in multiple competitions for the next season.

#3 Another centre-back

It has been evident with Tottenham’s pursuit of Inter Milan centre-back Alessandro Bastoni that Conte wishes to add further to the team’s defensive resources.

Eric Dier has stepped up his game under Conte and alongside Christian Romero and Ben Davies who has undeniably provided a solid defensive partnership.

If Tottenham could get hold of another centre-back who could get into the first team right away, it could perhaps boost their chances of closing the gap on the top three.
