Barcelona are closing in on signing Raphinha from Leeds United. The Brazilian winger is touted to be Ousmane Dembele’s replacement at Camp Nou.
Goal understands that Barca are in advanced talks with the player’s agents but have not yet submitted an official bid for the 25-year-old.
Raphinha has established himself as a key component in a misfiring Leeds attack this season. He has scored nine goals and has assisted thrice, from 27 appearances. The Brazilian has been his side’s go-to man in the absence of their striker Patrick Bamford.
Ousmane Dembele is set to leave Barcelona as a free agent this June. Thus, it is clear that Xavi is looking to replace Dembele with Raphinha.
The source also claims that the 25-year-old has ignored his side’s efforts to renew his contract, which runs out in 2024.
The ball is in Barcelona’s court who are also said to have an agreement with the player over personal terms. It is unclear at the moment the valuation that Leeds have slapped on Raphinha.
A strategic or a sporting move?
I feel that this is a strategic move by Barcelona which could turn into a sporting one, depending on Dembele’s future at the club.
Those following Los Cules will know that the club prefers Dembele to extend his contract. The Frenchman is arguably the most talented player of this generation. He is ambipedal, agile and lethal in 1v1 situations. In other words, he has got monstrous talent and potential which is nearly impossible to replace. In the last few weeks, we have seen the best of Dembele in a Barca shirt and the scary part is that he could do even better.
The 24-year-old has six assists and a goal from his last six appearances for Xavi.
Time is running out for both sides to hold talks over a new contract. Barca are unwilling to make the first move and Dembele’s entourage has not shown any encouraging signs as well. There is hope within the club offices that the situation could change for the good in the coming days.
In the dressing room Dembele is said to be insisting on his desire to stay at the club. Within the club’s offices there is hope that his entourage will make the first move. It is panning out to be a game of chess between the two parties.
The coming few weeks will be crucial. Barca have a replacement for Dembele ready. And, one thing is clear; if he wants to stay, it will be on the club’s terms.
