Newcastle United have lodged a bid of £28 million for Sevilla defender Diego Carlos as per reports.

The Magpies have been busy making moves in the January transfer window as they aim to stay in the Premier League. Having already signed Kieran Trippier from Atletico Madrid, they have snapped up Chris Wood from fellow relegation strugglers Burnley in a £25 million deal.

According to The Times, Newcastle United have set their sights on Sevilla’s Diego Carlos, as Eddie Howe wants two new central defenders in his squad this January.

The Magpies initially failed in their bid to land the Brazilian defender, with a £25 million offer rejected by Sevilla. However, they have now upped their offer to £28 million to try and persuade the Spanish side into selling their star defender, the report adds.

Diego Carlos, 28, has been a key player for Sevilla in recent years. The centre-back has played a pivotal role in Sevilla’s rise to second in the La Liga standings this season, scoring two goals in 19 appearances to date.

Diego Carlos to Newcastle United – A top option for the Magpies?

Eddie Howe has already been backed by the cash-rich Newcastle United board with Kieran Trippier and Chris Wood. Now, the need for a centre-back is paramount to the club, with the team managing just one league win in 19 games and conceding a whopping 42 goals—the joint-most in the division.

Diego Carlos is the latest player to be linked with a move to Newcastle, as per the aforementioned report. It is claimed that they are looking for two central defenders to add to their roster in this month.

While Newcastle United have a host of centre-backs on their roster already, not many possess the ball-playing skills and aerial ability that someone like Carlos can bring to the table.

The Brazilian has become a mainstay at the back for Sevilla in the last couple of years, helping Julen Lopetegui’s side win the Europa League during the 2019-20 season.

He is a technically sound defender who can carry the ball for long distances and spray diagonals to initiate a move from the back. The ex-Nantes man is strong in the tackle and aerially robust, and such qualities could help him adapt quickly to the demands of Premier League football.

With that in mind, someone of Carlos’ qualities, leadership skills and top-level experience might come in handy for Newcastle United in their fight against relegation. However, it remains to be seen if the Magpies can agree a fee with Sevilla for their star defender.
