West Ham United put in an excellent performance to beat Chelsea 3-2 in the Premier League at the London Stadium on Saturday.
Thiago Silva opened the scoring with a header for Chelsea in the first half. Manuel Lanzini equalised for West Ham from the spot after goalkeeper Edouard Mendy had fouled Jarrod Bowen in the box. But Mason Mount restored the lead with a crisp volley past Lukasz Fabianski.
Jarrod Bowen levelled it for the Hammers, and with three minutes remaining, substitute Arthur Masuaku’s miss-hit cross—that caught out the Chelsea goalkeeper at his near post—turned out to be the winner for the hosts.
Chelsea Player Ratings vs West Ham
Edouard Mendy- 3/10
Mendy was guilty of giving away a penalty and was at fault again for Masuaku’s late winner. It was a rare day off in goal for the Senegalese.
Reece James- 6/10
James was Chelsea’s main attacking weapon down the right flank. Got forward well and delivered a few dangerous crosses in the box. Defended well too, especially during West Ham’s counter-attacks after the break.
Andreas Christensen- 5/10
Christensen was tasked to man-mark Antonio and he largely kept the West Ham striker at bay. However, the Dane couldn’t prevent the Blues from losing.
Thiago Silva- 7/10
Barring a poor giveaway in the opening minutes of the game, Silva was solid at the back. Gave Chelsea the lead with a towering header from a corner before making a goal-line clearance to deny Coufal at the other end.
Antonio Rudiger- 5/10
Rudiger got forward with the ball many times but couldn’t find the telling pass at times. Despite a decent performance, the German couldn’t stop Chelsea from conceding three goals.
Marcos Alonso- 4/10
Alonso was weak under pressure from Coufal in the build-up to Bowen’s leveller. Lacked energy and intensity down the left flank.
Jorginho- 4/10
Played an undercooked back pass to Mendy and the Chelsea goalkeeper conceded a penalty in pressure by bringing Bowen down in the box. Kept the ball moving from the middle of the park but that wasn’t enough.
Ruben Loftus-Cheek- 6/10
Loftus-Cheek worked very hard in midfield as he got forward well to help in the attacks while putting in some well-timed challenges to stop West Ham’s counters.
Hakim Ziyech- 5/10
Played a beautiful cross to set up Mount’s goal. Had a couple of half-chances from which he could have done well.
Mason Mount- 6/10
A goal and an assist for Mount to cap off a fine display in east London. Took his goal expertly with a fine volley.
Kai Havertz- 5/10
Looked bright with his movement and exchanges in and around the West Ham box. Had a couple of chances in the first half but couldn’t finish them. Went off injured at half-time after a last-ditch challenge from Zouma.
Substitutes
Romelu Lukaku- 4/10
Came on for Havertz at half-time but didn’t get enough service from his teammates to actually threaten the West Ham backline.
Callum Hudson-Odoi- 5/10
Added zest and tempo to Chelsea’s attack after replacing Ziyech in the 64th minute.
Christian Pulisic- 4/10
Like Hudson-Odoi, Pulisic provided zip and energy to the Blues’ play but could not find a way through West Ham’s backline.
