Liverpool are interested in signing Newcastle United attacker Allan Saint-Maximin in January. The 24-year-old has been at the Magpies since 2019 and is in his third season with the club.
As per CalcioMercato, the Reds, along with Premier League rivals Chelsea and Everton, are interested in signing the Frenchman. The Merseyside club could make a move for him in the January transfer window.
Allan Saint-Maximin moved to Newcastle United from Nice in August 2019, signing a six-year deal with the club and extended his contract last year, which now expires in 2026.
Allan Saint-Maximin: Right option for Liverpool?
Allan Saint-Maximin has been one of the few bright spots for Newcastle United this season, scoring twice and assisting thrice in seven Premier League games. In the absence of Callum Wilson, the French attacker has led the line admirably well and has been the focal point of all Newcastle attacks.
Interest in him from top 10 Premier League sides don’t come as a surprise as he has matured as a player and is playing some of his best football at the moment. The 24-year-old is an exciting dribbler who likes to take on defences with his pace and good close control. He also pops up in the right place in and around the box to score the odd goal.
Liverpool could benefit from the addition of a player like Saint-Maximin, especially in January as the Reds will lose two of their best attackers due to international fixtures. The African Cup of Nations will be held in January, and Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane – two key attackers for the Reds – are likely to take part in the competition for their national sides. The injury to youngster Harvey Elliot has further depleted manager Jurgen Klopp’s options in wide areas.
Klopp could have just two natural wingers to select in January – Diogo Jota and Takumi Minamino. Jota has been good for the Reds since signing with the club last season, but Minamino hasn’t settled in yet at the club and hasn’t been afforded too many opportunities.
Having the services of someone like Saint-Maximin will give Klopp four very good options in the wide areas, apart from Minamino and Elliot, which adds plenty of depth to the Liverpool squad.
Saint-Maximin is a player that will excite the Kop with his speed and enthusiasm and could become a crowd favourite. One area that he will have to improve is his goalscoring, as he has scored just 9 times in 63 Premier League games. But, playing with world-class players could give him more opportunities to score.
He could also prove to be a smash hit in the long-term. Klopp has found it difficult on days when the pair of Mane and Salah haven’t fired as his back-up options severely lack quality. But having someone enterprising such as the Frenchman will quell such worries to a certain degree.
Newcastle are in a spot of bother at the moment and even though the player seems dedicated enough to the club, a decent offer come January could test his and the club’s resolve as well.
