Leeds United are reportedly plotting a move for Ajax’s marauding full-back Noussair Mazraoui next summer.
Mazraoui’s contract expires at the end of the season and he will be free to negotiate a move with foreign clubs from January.
According to Football Insider, the fact that Mazraoui has roped in Mino Raiola as his agent has opened the door to a move to a top European club next year.
The Morocco international has been in sensational form for Ajax the past few seasons. The 23-year-old has made 113 appearances in all competitions for the Dutch champions since making his senior debut in 2018.
Ajax are keen on retaining Mazraoui’s services considering his stellar displays for the club, but reports suggest the Moroccan has had his head turned by interest from the likes of Leeds and Arsenal.
What will Noussair Mazraoui add to the Leeds team?
Leeds United currently lack depth in defence, especially at right-back. Luke Ayling is the only recognised player at that position, but the Englishman is 30 and has just two years left on his contract.
Moreover, he has struggled with his form and fitness this season, meaning the likes of Stuart Dallas and Jamie Shackleton have had to deputise at right-back.
In that context, a move for Ajax’s Mazraoui should be a top priority for Marcelo Bielsa. Bielsa likes players who add plenty of energy to the side, are comfortable advancing the ball and can feature in different positions. Mazraoui fits the bill perfectly.
Having been a part of Ajax’s fluid, attacking teams for the past few years, the Moroccan has great technical ability and is fantastic in possession. The 23-year-old is at his best when he’s bombing down the right flank, dribbling past his opponents, and creating chances for his attackers to feast on.
Mazraoui has great vision and passing range and rarely coughs up possession cheaply. He has also developed his end product tremendously over the past few years; he’s already scored five goals and provided three assists in all competitions this season for Ajax.
The Moroccan is also a proactive defender, who constantly looks to win back possession for his team. Last season, he averaged 1.8 tackles and 1.5 interceptions per game in the league. The 23-year-old is a tireless runner, which will hold him in good stead under Bielsa.
If Mazraoui can adapt to the rigours of the Premier League, he could prove to be a fantastic long-term addition to the Leeds squad.
