Chelsea are interested in signing Bayern Munich winger Leroy Sane. The German international moved to Bayern last summer from Manchester City for a fee of around €45 million.
As per the Express, Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel is a big fan of Sane, and is willing to allow any of three players — Callum Hudson-Odoi, Christian Pulisic, or Hakim Ziyech — to Bayern Munich as part of any deal.
In his 135 appearances for City, he scored 39 goals, with his last full season being his most productive where he scored 16 goals.
He has played 49 times for Bayern since his move last summer, scoring 11 goals and assisting 15 times.
How will Leroy Sane fit in at Chelsea?
Chelsea’s reported interest in Leroy Sane is a surprising one considering the talent that they have in attacking positions at the moment. The likes of Mason Mount, Kai Havertz, Hakim Ziyech, Callum Hudson-Odoi, and Timo Werner can play in the wide areas or in and around the central striker, i.e. Romelu Lukaku.
What makes the Blues’ interest in Leroy Sane even more surprising is his average form with Bayern Munich. The German’s return to his homeland was thought by many as a way for him to get his career back on track and develop to the potential many expected him to have.
But, Sane has looked average, in a very good Bayern Munich side. The German is a quick and direct winger who likes to take on defences and get to the final third. He is a player that is deadly in counter-attacking situations and in teams that have a lot of the ball.
Chelsea should make a move for him if they get rid of underutilised players or those that have not been in form like Ziyech, Hudson-Odoi or Werner.
Sane could slot in on either wing and use his pace, strength, dribbling, and clever passing in the final third to create chances for his team. What could work for him at Chelsea is the freedom that he could get in the final third to roam around and exploit spaces.
He may also not have to defend a lot as Chelsea play with wing-backs who track back, as well as defensive-minded midfielders. That could also Sane to play his natural game and drive at defences.
If Sane does join Chelsea, he will likely play alongside Lukaku. Mason Mount and Kai Havertz seem to be Tuchel’s preferred options in those positions and he will have to fight with them for a place in the Chelsea starting XI.
